Airmade Cocoon

Modem collaborated with Air Company to develop the Airmade Cocoon, a habitable enclosure woven from carbon-negative materials. The project translates Air Company’s CO₂ conversion technology into a structural application, proposing a future where architecture is spun rather than constructed.

Much like a caterpillar spins a cocoon for transformation, the Airmade system fabricates a yarn-based enclosure. The design reimagines carbon as a foundational element rather than a pollutant. It converts proprietary technology into a solid filament that can be deployed at an architectural scale to turn a greenhouse gas into a physical resource.

Translated into design, this yarn becomes the basis for woven environments. The system utilizes knitting and weaving techniques to define the structure. These experiments open new directions for architectural applications, ranging from membranes and tensile surfaces to adaptable shelters formed from the material itself.

The system is adaptable across indoor spaces, outdoor terrains, and extraterrestrial environments. The intent is not to present a finished solution but to define a material trajectory. By reimagining carbon as a structural medium, the project envisions a future where structures emerge from the air itself to turn an abundant atmospheric element into the thread of new habitats.

Aperture states control the enclosure’s performance. The closed state provide insulation and structural support, while an open apertures allow for access and airflow. This layering generates a tactile surface that balances material efficiency with the ability to flex in response to context.
