Modem collaborated with Teenage Engineering and Bureau Cool to develop a digital add-on for the EP–133 K.O.II that generates bespoke audio samples. Integrating generative AI into the sampling workflow, the interface transforms text descriptions into immediate sound material.
Sampling has historically relied on finding existing sounds within a finite catalog of recorded music. The EP Sample Generator challenges this constraint by treating natural language as a limitless source of audio potential. Built on Meta’s AudioCraft model, the system interprets text prompts, ranging from “shredding guitar riff” to “jazz flute solo,” and translates them into unique .wav files.
The interface offers two distinct modes: “Rookie” for predefined explorations and “Free Fight” for open-ended prompting, allowing users to shape the sonic texture before transferring it directly to the device. By merging the traditional art of sampling with generative AI, the project inspires musicians to express themselves in new ways.
